Important Vocabulary
Reconstruction: The period after the Civil War when the South was reorganized and reintegrated into the Union (1865–77)
Impeach: To accuse of a crime, esp of treason or some other offence against the state
13th Amendment: An amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1865, abolishing slavery
14th Amendment: An amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1868, defining national citizenship and forbidding the states to restrict the basic rights of citizens or other persons.
15th Amendment: An amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1870, prohibiting the restriction of voting rights “on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”.
Jim Crow laws: Any state law discriminating against black persons.

Ex-Confederate Soldier
Facts:
1. Served in the civil war and came back home to find their house and farms torn apart
2. Scalawags and Carpet baggers posed a huge threat to the ex-confederate soldiers
3. Mainly concerned about reintegrating states rights into the society
Quote: "I served, and gave my everything only to come home and loose everything else. I know there were some innocent people here but I am enraged as I thought my battle was over when the civil war ended, but i thought wrong."
Freedman
Facts:
1. Freed by the Emancipation Proclamation
2. Started attending schools freely
3. Soon after being freed, the government passes "black codes", which limits freed slaves rights concerning voting rights, job, travel, and leisure time.
Quote: "e all the same. were free! I never thought this day would come-- a day where I don't have to listen to someone else's commands. I was thrilled, but then the black codes came out. They give us our freedom and then choose to limit I. I don't understand because our color doesn't mean anything, because beneath our skin we are all the same.
Carpetbagger
Facts:
1. Worked with Scalawags (white southerners who supported the Radical Republicans)
2. Investors looking for economic gain in the reconstruction period in the South.
3. Invested in properties for taxes, offering small sums of money for farms, and floating loans to the freedmen.
Quote: "I don't really care what happens to the out during this period of time, as long as I make money and good investments. As long as I stay on the North's side, I will reap benefits while the Southerners sit here a loath me."
Women
Facts:
1. After the Civil war, it was mainly young, and middle aged women
2. forced to run the home(cooking, cleaning, sewing, educating the children, and working in fields)
3. Have little to no rights
Quote:" I'm furious . Im stuck at home doing boring things while all the men are out working, making money, and voting. This is NOT fair and it needs to be brought to a stop. Women are just as capable as men. This is discrimination, and now i'm starting to see how blacks felt when everyone was/is discriminating against them."
